Influencing Education Policy

By Miryam Ehrlich Williamson

The Rural School and Community Trust is offering interested people the chance take part in preparing a set of position papers on national rural education policy. The papers have been drafted over the past year by rural education activists from across the country.  For the next two months, the Rural Trust will be seeking comments on the papers.

You can read and comment on any or all of them here.

Topics include:

  • Student success
  • School funding
  • Environmental policy
  • Community revitalization
  • Curriculum and Instruction

This is a grassroots effort meant to involve anyone interested in rural education, not limited to teachers and academics.  Each of the five committees will review comments and consider changes before completing its  report.

If you would like to join a committee, you are invited to say so in your comment.

The reports will be presented and debated at the eighth annual meeting of the Rural Education Working Group, a gathering of rural citizens and educators, slated for April 19-21, 2009, in Hendersonville, N.C. Theme of the conference is “Healthy Rural Schools, Healthy Rural Communities.”

Conference details are available here.
