Flip Floppin’ Away

by Sean Reagan

I’m catching up John McCain speeches these days. It’s loads of fun. I’m actually thinking of a new drinking game. Every time I read something that contradicts a previous McCain position, or which is patently false, I take a shot.

Trouble with that is, I’d be under the table halfway through the first speech.

Take, for example, McCain’s recent address at the NRA’s annual meeting in Kentucky. McCain and the gun owners have long had an uneasy relationship, even though he’s more in their camp than not. He’s opposed background checks at gun shows, lawsuits against gun manufacturers, and most ammo bans. He’s opposed to most restrictions on assault rifles.

Anyway, down in the Bluegrass State, McCain let fly this chestnut:

I am a committed conservationist. I have long supported multiple uses for public lands that ensure they are available for this and future generations to hunt, fish and explore . . .

Not so fast, says the League of Conservation Voters. For the 110th session, they gave McCain a score of – hold onto your hats, folks – 0%. Gotta love those goose eggs. During the 2005-2006 session, he garnered a whopping 41%. His lifetime LCV score is just 24%.

Obama’s score for the 110th session? 67%. In the 109th? 96%.

Just sayin’.

For fun, let’s take a quick stroll down memory lane with the Senator from Arizona. Maybe he started his political life as a committed conservationist and just kind of lost his way.

Well, not so much.

In 1983, McCain voted against CR# 378 which would have provided funds for the protection and management of the National Park System.

In 1984, he voted against CR# 396, which would have strengthened the EPA’s ability to protect groundwater from which at least half the nation’s drinking water comes from.

Also in ’84 he voted in favor of trimming Interior Department funding by $240 million.

If that’s what McCain calls a commitment to conservation, I’d hate to see what indifference looks like.

Oh and hey. Let’s do a bonus environmental flip flop. Yeah, you know what I’m talking about – ethanol. McCain used to be against it. Now he’s for it.

Yep, that screeching sound you hear is the Straight Talk Express doing yet another 180.

I propose a new theme song for the McCain campaign. We’ll take Paul Simon’s classic “Slip Slidin’ Away,” and tweak it just a little. “Flip Floppin’ away.”

It’s got a nice ring, don’t you think?

  1. LOL!
Welcome to RuralVotes. You are obviously going to be a lot of fun to read.

  2. Or how about this one. The long and the short of it is that first he breaks with Bush and doesn’t like warrantless wiretapping and now he likes it so much he wants to give the telecoms immunity. McCain can’t seem to even keep it straight when it comes to national security issues – his supposed strong suit! Add to that the “disarray” of his campaign and you are left to wonder who is running things over there.
    Feelin’ good about November 4th!

  3. It’s funny that in 2004 the Republicans  screamed about John Kerry being a flip flopper.  Now they have to defend a real flip flopper.  Karma!
I’ve been wondering how long the meme, McCain= the Straight Talk Express, has been in existence.  Anybody know?  Did it come about when Sen. McCain ran in the 2000 Republican primary?

  4. Rhoda, my thought exactly.
It’s also going to be nice to be able to forget about “she who shall remain unnamed” and start focussing on McCain. More meat on the bones in that comparison.
