Action Alert: Senate Votes Today on Farm Bill

Heads up from New England Farmers Union!

The Senate will begin voting today on a list of amendments to the farm bill. There are some very good things in this bill for New England and at least two amendments that would make it even better. Please call your Senators TODAY and ask them to support the bill and these floor amendments:

Brown (D-OH) Amendment #2445 Provides mandatory funding for both the Value Added Producer Grant Prgram and the Beginning Farmer and Rancher Development Program.

Chambliss (R-GA) Amendment #2438. Links the reciept of federally subsidized crop insurance to basic conservation requirements.

What’s in this bill?

The Agriculture Reform, Food and Jobs Act of 2012 accomplishes significant savings over the current farm bill budget baseline while supporting many of the programs crucial to the success of family farmers in New England. It includes new resources for specialty crops and for the promotion of local and regional food markets. The bill includes mandatory funding for programs that will help our farmers to conserve energy and to develop a new generation of biofuels.

The bill directs the Risk Management Agency to develop better crop insurance products for the diversified farms found in New England. It provides cost share assistance for nutrition incentive programs that will benefit our specialty crop producers as well as low-income consumers in New England. It provides important support for organic certification cost share and organic research. For these and other provisions please call your Senators and ask them to support the bill.
